Last week Harry’s Fund received the news we have been waiting for since September, that we have been successful in our application to WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited) for funding for stage one of Harry’s Park In Alltwen and have received a grant of £75,000 which will enable work to begin in the New Year.

Harry’s Fund was set up following the tragic death of Harry Patterson in September 2011.   In March 2012 we were successful in achieving Charity Status and one of the aims of the fund is to build a memorial park for Harry in Alltwen.  We have worked closely with Cilybebyll Community Council who donated the land next to the Community Centre in Alltwen and continued to work in partnership with an application for funding to WREN.

“This is such a boost for us as a charity and even more so as a family.  This grant means we can achieve our first goal in building a park which will bring a community together and help us remember Harry for all our days.  We are just thrilled to bits with the award and cannot thank WREN and everyone that has helped with the application enough.  Now the hard work can really begin”
... Michelle Patterson.
Councillor Marcia Spooner, Chair of Cilybebyll Community Council said:“This is wonderful news for Harry’s Fund.  The Council is pleased to be able to assist with the project, and is looking forward to seeing this area of land transformed for the benefit of local children.  I understand that design work has now started and we will receive reports on progress on a regular basis.”

Meleri Jones, Grant Manager for Wren said “We are pleased to be able to support Harrys Fund in partnership with Cilybebyll Community Council to deliver this exciting project. We have previously given grant aid for improvements at the Alltwen Community Centre and this project will further enhance those facilities as well as create a focal point that will benefit the whole community. It will be available to be used and enjoyed by all”

WREN is a not for profit business that awards grants to community projects from funds donated by FCC Environment to the Landfill Communities Fund.

Harry’s Fund would like to thank everyone who has been involved in raising funds for the project so far and hope that people will continue to do so as this is just stage one.  We have been able to apply for this grant as the funds we have raised so far have been used for match funding for our application to WREN.  We continue to work hard to raise funds to achieve all the aims of our charity and look forward to Harry’s Park being a reality in 2013.

Today has been a very difficult day for the Patterson Family, the inquest into Harry Patterson's death was heard in Cardiff. The inquest was attended by Christian, Michelle and close family members.

Although the inquest was very difficult it did provide answers as to what happened on September 13th.   The inquest heard that a combination of the car not being parked in gear, the steepness of the slope and the brakes' "slippage" as they cooled led to the tragic accident. The Coroner Mary Hassell called the tragedy "appalling" and recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Philip Painting, of the South Wales Police collision investigation unit, said many people did not realise they needed to leave a vehicle in gear when parking on a steep slope. He said: "This is because when the vehicle is parked when the rear brakes are still hot, as they cool down it can cause the disk brakes to slip.

Christian and Michelle today decided that this important message needs to get out there to prevent this awful tragedy from ever happening to another family.  Neither Christian or Michelle were aware that a vehicle should be parked in gear especially when on a slope.  Philip Painting drew attention to this in court stating that although it is mentioned in the highway code when asked most people would not know that the safe way to park a vehicle would be in gear.  He said that many police officers were only made aware of this when they took their advanced police driving courses.

Christian has asked Harry's Fund today to help get this message out there and to raise awareness of parking your car in gear when it is parked.

A message from our Patron - Kai Owen

"It's been almost 12 weeks since I received the awful news about Harry. My heart went straight to Christian, Michelle,  Dylan and their families. A few days later I went to Alltwen to visit them, to  give them my love and support. Whilst there,  I was overwhelmed at the number of cards, flowers and visitors they were getting. The strength of community was so great, I truly believed it helped my dear friends at that time. And now,  as the weeks and months pass 'Harrys Fund' has become a focus and an inspiration to all. It's a wonderful way of keeping the memory of a very special boy alive. 'Harrys Fund' has only just begun, and we've already witnessed the amazing generosity of people. Thank you to everyone who has so far contributed to this very special cause. I beleive  that we can bring nothing but smiles and sunshine to people  with this fund. And let's be honest, that's exactly what Harry always brought. X"

Representatives from Harry's Fund attended all the events. A big thank you to all who chose Harry's Fund as their benefactor.
